Moldova
Independence in 1991 brought with it the expectation that Moldova would be reunited with Romania in 1994 however the Moldovans voted against the proposal. In spite of international agreements, Russian troops have remained stationed within the breakaway region of Transdniestria. Relations with Russia have deteriorated in recent years.
Economic Strengths
Agriculture and food processing. Light manufacturing Signs of economic improvement. EU trade preferences granted.
Economic Weaknesses
Limited raw materials. Imported energy supplies. Corruption and instability, particularly over Transdniestria, deters investment. Slow pace of reform. Cumbersome bureaucracy. Large black economy.
