Norway

In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU. The current economic focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. It is a constitutional requirement that government creates conditions that enable every person to find work.

Oil and natural gas exports, shipping. Natural resources. Large budget surplus. Low inflation and unemployment.
