Portugal has become a diversified and increasingly service-based economy since joining the European Community in 1986 and adopting the euro in 2002. As levels of productivity are low, Portugal struggles to compete with lower cost producers in Central & Eastern Europe, as well as those further afield in Asia.
Diversified economy: banking, tourism, high foreign investment, car export. Low inflation.
Low educational attainment. Inefficient agriculture sector & loss of manufacturing to Eastern Europe and Asia.
